About International Dialling Codes

International phone numbers follow the E.164 standard set by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Each number starts with a + followed by the country calling code, then the national subscriber number.

Country calling codes were originally assigned based on geographic regions: all codes starting with 1 are North America, codes starting with 4 are Europe, codes starting with 6 cover Southeast Asia and Pacific, and so on.

Some countries share a calling code — the +1 North American Numbering Plan (NANP) covers the USA, Canada, and 22 Caribbean nations. The distinction is made by the area code that follows.
